A Salute to AfterSchool Teachers Iryna Arbatska l Music Conservatory l Piano l Voice l 2009–present Iryna thinks one of the qualities that makes Trevor unique is the atmosphere. "While being exceptionally comfortable and relaxed for both students and teachers, it has unspoken elements of stress-free discipline and respect." Her most memorable moment was "when I played a piece for my student that she was about to learn. With tears in her eyes, she said, 'I never realized that music can express so much. It's beautiful!' I got teary myself, because that is exactly why I teach—to have my students express their feelings through music, and to have them connect to it." Lisa Goldberg l Director of Auxiliary Programs l 2004–present Lisa was hired as the AfterSchool Coordinator and then took over the Music Conservatory and June camp program, where she uses her dance and theatre background daily. What does Lisa love most about Trevor? "e feeling of community. Everyone at Trevor is very welcoming. You can be whoever you want to be." She especially enjoys "getting to know almost all of the children in Lower School and watching them grow and go on to Middle and Upper School." David Goodman l Chess l 1995–present "It's been a great pleasure to teach for so many years in such a friendly, open program. Chess is something you can do all your life, and it's rewarding to help develop the chess skills of so many kids." Memorable experiences include "watching kids from class grow into strong tournaments players—and, especially working with Kindergartners, all of whom want to give up after one class, but stick with it, and go on to master the basics of the game." Erin Lee Kelly l Creating eatre l Vocal Music l 2001–present Erin came to Trevor as a working actor, and switched career paths—becoming a children's musician and songwriter, partly as a result of working with AfterSchool students. Because students "wanted to perform material that did not yet exist, about topics that were important to them," Erin began to compose songs. ey have appeared on three CDs, which have, thus far, garnered six national awards for songwriting. Some of her most memorable moments were "when my students started bringing in songs they had written themselves to perform in our shows— amazing!" When the school day ends, there are myriad opportunities for Trevor students to explore additional educational and enrichment activities in a wholly inclusive environment. From fall through spring, in three trimesters, students in Nursery through 5th grade participate in Trevor's core AfterSchool program, Encore, which offers dozens of dynamic classes, as well as a dedicated homework lab for older students. Trevor's Music Conservatory is available to Kindergarten through 12th- grade students interested in the serious study of music through individual lessons. A robotics team, martial arts, and chess tournaments are also available to Middle and Upper School students. Here, we salute some of the AfterSchool faculty. 1 0 T R E V O R D AY S C H O O L ■ S P R I N G 20 1 7 – 2 0 1 8
