Samantha Worcester '18 had a keen interest in coding and physics, and combined her passions into one meaningful Bridge project. Mr. Lindow, Upper School Computer Science Teacher and Senior Technology Advisor, approached Sam about a problem that Trevor was experiencing with their window handles. Twelve of the windows on the West Campus were missing a handle and the manufacturer had gone out of business. A natural problem solver, Sam devised a cutting-edge solution. She would use the one remaining handle as a model to create a design for a replacement bit, and produce actual new knobs using a 3-D printer. By utilizing precise measurements and an advanced coding program, Sam created her prototype for the bit. She had multiple tests of design, function, and material, and with the assistance of Mr. Lindow, created 3-D files that were then cast in stainless steel by a company called Shapeways, which has factories and offices in New York and the Netherlands. e last step in the process was to design and produce the physical knobs that will attach to the bits. Sam presented her scientific and creative process to 1st- through 4th-grade students in May. e students engaged their curiosity with many questions, and activated their artistry by submitting unique handle designs. Sam ultimately picked 12 different handle designs from the students, and produced them on the Trevor 3-D printer. ey will be installed for the 2018–2019 school year. Sam applied her knowledge from advanced programmers' workshop and physics courses, as well as from the mentorship by Mr. Lindow and tutorials found online, to advance her 3-D design ability. Sam will be taking physics courses in college and says that having an understanding of coding is a tremendous benefit. She will also continue to focus on her hobby with 3-D printing.
