When did you begin at Trevor? Two thousand and one. I remember because I was certain that year would play out exactly the way it did in the movie 2001: A Space Odyssey. How did Trevor prepare you for college and for "real life"? Beyond the fact that I needed a high school diploma to go to college , I'm grateful that I went to Trevor—where I was allowed to be myself and to form my own opinions of the world around me. Proof of that, years down the line: I get to give snarky answers to the alumni magazine. Not sure how many schools would let that fly. What are your passions? Not a huge fan of the word "passion." It's too passionate. It's true that I like to do things. Ask anyone; they will tell you, "Oh, Ellis? at guy loves doing things. He's always doing a thing or two." Mostly those things involve drawing: doodling, drafting, note-taking-that- Left: When we asked Ellis to draw a full-length self- portrait, he stunned us by returning this drawing within hours; Below: Ellis chats with New Yorker Cartoon Editor Emma Allen and Associate Cartoon Editor Colin Stokes in the summer of 2017, when Ellis joined the magazine. Shortly after, in an article for the HuffPost, Ellis recounted that Emma advised him that his "jokes work best when (you) take something everyone has seen and take it to surreal places." Ellis acknowledged, "at acts as the framework of my thinking. A personal connection is key, too. If I can find a way to make fun of myself, that generally means it will resonate with people."
