and department chair, brings his Grade 9
English class to the Community Garden for their
reading and discussion of Macbeth; Below:
Juliette P. '22 plays Lady Macbeth to Haydan
L. '22's Macbeth. In this scene, the king is
telling his wife that she need not know about
the murderous lengths to which he is going to
retain his crown. Fresh air must inspire study of
the Bard; this was just one of several English
classes that were held on the roof last spring.
Pamela Murphy, Grades 9–12 English Teacher,
recounts, "Although the acoustics may be a bit
better in the Sally A. Rocker Theatre—no low-
flying planes, for instance, which once drove
us downstairs—Mr. Evans (also Grades 9–12
English) and I had a fabulous time taking our
classes to the Community Garden to perform
their Shakespearean scenes for each other."
Every Middle and Upper School class reads an
increasingly complex Shakespeare play, a key
element of the English curriculum.

A Midsummer Night's Dream in one period and practice
yoga in the next!
