e Carriage Barn Arts Center is home to the New Canaan Society of the Arts. Please talk about your current role as Executive Director of the Carriage Barn Arts Center in New Canaan, Connecticut. I studied art history and painting and worked at galleries and an art museum during and after college, but I actually spent most of my career in the magazine-publishing industry, doing sales and marketing. I worked with clients on creative business strategies, and absolutely loved the energy and fast-paced environment. When our three kids were starting school, we moved out of NYC, and I started working with a few local nonprofit organizations. I've been the director of the Carriage Barn Arts Center since 2016. Our mission is to promote the visual and performing arts, and enrich the community through exhibitions, education, and cultural experiences. We operate a spectacular gallery in a historic building in New Canaan, and organize about eight exhibits each year, along with multiple programs, classes, concerts, and other special events. Balancing time spent on outreach and promotion with time spent on planning and producing exhibits is a constant challenge. We have competitive juried exhibits that attract artists beyond the local area—and open community exhibits for amateur artists or students. It's a large gallery, but a relatively small organization— so, my responsibilities include fundraising and PR, working with artists and performers, building maintenance, insurance, and everything in between. One of my favorite parts of the job is when the work is delivered for a new show and the installation process begins. Each show features 100–150 pieces; organizing the work in a visually appealing way, in which the art relates to one another—and, at the same time, tells a story—is really fun for me. How did e Day School prepare you for "real life"? Although TDS was small, I was exposed to so much. Having respect for different ideas and walks of life and personalities was ingrained in all of us, and I can't imagine feeling differently. In "real life," my friends and colleagues have vastly different lifestyles, ideas, and opinions. at makes life so much more fun and interesting! Creativity was also prized at e Day School. And it extended beyond the amazing musical performances, visual art, and filmmaking—to how we learned about science, and computers, and geography. I think our teachers really had fun teaching at e Day School, and that made an enormous impact on all of us. In my work and as a parent, being a
