Coordinated Sciences and Real-World Applications ""My graduate program is all about connecting various disciplines, from doing cell cultures and biophysical analyses…to organic synthesis for materials chemistry or biochemical assays," explains Eli Kengmana, Trevor Class of 2015. "Little did I know back then that I would be implementing multiple science disciplines at once," reflects Eli, who double- majored in biology and chemistry at Brandeis University and is currently a Ph.D. candidate in chemical biology in the Chemistry-Biology Interface Program at Johns Hopkins University. "If I had the chance to go back, I would tell my [high school] self that all of these sciences are connected to each other, and that I'll really appreciate that in the future." Instead, Eli says, "At Trevor I was mainly interested in biology and music, though music became more of a side thing after I got to college." e coordination of Trevor's science curriculum is unique in the Upper School landscape. Most non-Trevor adults remember a sequence of biology, chemistry, and physics as teenagers, leading to senior-year electives (or for some, a disavowal of science pursuits forever). Trevor's coordinated science program disrupts this conventional sequence; it is designed to deeply engage students with interconnected applications of science and respond to their growing curiosities and advancing aptitudes. In 9th through 11th grades, Trevor students take a coordinated three- year course of study that focuses on two sciences per academic year. (e sequence was changed in fall 2015 from three sciences per year to two.) is coordinated approach offers students an understanding of the core principles behind each science and the many connections between them. As students' laboratory and mathematics skills build throughout high school, topics are studied with increasing depth and sophistication in each discipline. e sequence is: n Grade 9 Coordinated Science (Chemistry I and Physics I) n Grade 10 Coordinated Science (Chemistry II and Biology I) n Grade 11 Coordinated Science (Biology II and Physics II) 3 1 T R E V O R D AY S C H O O L n S U M M E R 2 0 2 0 – 2 0 2 1
