She not only made it possible for me to go but also connected my brother, Josh, and me more deeply to the community as she joined the admissions team while I was in 2nd grade. Her love for the school was infectious, and she stayed part of it long after Josh and I graduated. She built lasting relationships and attracted many wonderful families—many families with whom we've remained connected. e Day School is a community that stays with you—a model for building similar communities as we go through life. n Opposite page, images in blue block, clockwise from top left: Ethan's December 2019 Zoom presentation in India poses the quintessential Placemaking question: "What if Cities Were Built Around Streets as Places?"; Ethan's presentation for Placemaking Week in China was held in Wuhan, which would soon become known as ground zero for the coronavirus pandemic; Placemaking Week in Japan, in 2021; Placemaking Week Europe in Valencia, Spain, June 2019; Ethan launching PlacemakingX at UN-Habitat's World Urban Forum in Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates, in February 2020, his last in-person conference before the pandemic shut down international travel; Recorded in Stockholm in May 2019 and available via Vimeo, this Future Place Leadership presentation addresses the economic benefits of public spaces in cold, dark, small towns, and elsewhere in Nordic countries; is page, left top: Ethan's 2nd-grade homeroom with Mr. Scieszka; Left bottom: Ethan in the lead role of Joseph; Middle top: One of many Field Days that Ethan remembers fondly; Right top: Ethan (left) and brother, Josh, with their mother, Barbara Kent, on a hike in the Cascade Mountains in Washington state; Right bottom: Residents and visitors to this plaza in Parramatta, New South Wales, Australia, have space in which they can stop for a game of chess, play ping pong, or enjoy socializing under umbrellas that keep them out of the strong Australian sun.
