Ozan M. Introduces Dr. Foodie During the fall semester, Ozan M. '22 added another project to his already brimming plate: creating and publishing his own app, Dr. Foodie. Ozan's interest in creating Dr. Foodie was sparked by the Congressional App Challenge, an annual competition in which students create and submit an original app. According to its site, the challenge is geared to "middle school and high school students, encouraging them to learn to code and inspiring them to pursue careers in computer science." Ozan and his app, Dr. Foodie, placed second in this year's competition! Ozan first learned about the Congressional App Challenge from Mr. Golanka at the beginning of the school year. He was immediately interested in participating and had an idea for combining AI (artificial intelligence) image recognition with nutrition. He created Dr. Foodie, a food-journal app that utilizes AI image recognition technologies to help users track their nutritional intake. Ozan focused on giving the user the facts necessary to make informed nutritional choices. With Dr. Foodie, the user photographs the food; AI identifies it and lists its nutritional specifications. e user then has the option of adding this food to their journal. Nutritionists' recommendations are also included, giving the user a clear understanding of their nutritional intake—and whether they are under- or overeating. Dr. Foodie's guidance allows the user to find a perfect balance. With only two months before the deadline, Ozan had to work quickly to create his app. He used Swift (a programming language), Xcode (a developmental tool), and API (application programming interface) services for the AI and nutrition facts. He was determined that his app would be both different and highly efficient. Of this project Ozan says, "It would keep me going late at night, which my parents hated; they complained that I would stop growing. For the last day or two, I decided not to sleep so that I could perfect it before submitting." Ozan credits Mr. Golanka, Mr. Lindow, and Dr. Henry for being a huge help to him and great resources throughout the process. Dr. Foodie isn't Ozan's only app. He now has ten apps on the App Store: three for Macs and seven for iPhones. Congratulations to Ozan for his impressive work!
