A lthough fans are an important emotional component of team sports, we often talk to our student athletes about how their drive and passion need to come from within, not from the stands. In that regard, our athletes were prepared to play without a cheering section. at said, we recognize that there are only so many games or matches in a child's life and parents and caregivers want the opportunity to watch their children play. Before we could bring visitors back, we found a small company that could handle our live streaming needs for every JV and Varsity competition and we turned a negative into a positive. With live streaming, all of the usual fans could watch our athletes play; but our reach now also extended beyond our local community: grandparents in Florida, parents at work, friends, alumni, Lower School families, and more. e Athletics program was now easily accessible to all of our community members. Our Homecoming Girls Varsity Volleyball match hit a high-water viewership of 265 individuals online. Whatever happens going forward, live streaming is here to stay. Fall 2021 brought a lessening of restrictions within the Athletics program, a full slate of competitions, and the return of Homecoming. is beloved Trevor tradition brought together the school community for a day of solidarity and celebration—breaking Trevor records with more than 500 attendees. e chance to organize and host this first all-school event in over 18 months was an honor and a challenge that we happily accepted. To see so many families, students, faculty, and alumni together again was an incredible feeling and we are already full speed ahead in planning for Homecoming 2022! Trevor concluded the fall 2021 season with multiple team spirit awards and all-league mentions, as well as a league MVP award. e winter season began with first- and second-place wins at the Dalton Basketball Tournament, from Boys Varsity Basketball and Girls Varsity Basketball, respectively. As we go to print, the winter Track team earned eight personal bests at their last meet and the Boys Varsity Basketball team is first in their league. is all speaks volumes about our resiliency and drive. Our athletes and coaches are the real deal. Students train and compete at the highest levels and their coaches drive this high-level athletic pursuit, but they also focus on developing the whole child. We are living proof that teams can thrive in unprecedented circumstances, be ultra competitive, win games, be good sports, and earn the respect of their opponents and fan base. We have come together through this ongoing pandemic, and done what was needed for our community, because that's what good teammates do. In the Athletics department, we learned these lessons growing up playing sports, and they are the same lessons that we will keep passing along to the student athletes we teach and coach each year. We plan to continue our steady forward march, and to do so safely and thoughtfully. We know there will be hiccups and setbacks— Omicron being just one—but we are planning for them. We need to be vigilant in our protocols and continue to be flexible and adapt so that we can stay true to the assertion that continues to guide us: Canceling Athletics is never an option.
