I was curious to see what the algorithm would produce when it was run on films that starred primarily African American and Latino actors. e results were not at all predictable as I learned about the technology's flaws, and the sensitivity and care needed in order for algorithms to be accurate. e results were often probabilistic in nature, rather than determinative. Part of this project was shown in a group exhibition called e Black Index—the exhibition opened in New York on January 27, 2022, at the Hunter College Art Galleries- Leubsdorf Gallery. e exhibition highlights how artists are beginning to dismantle photography's definitive hold on representations of Black life. e show has an incredible collection of works that should be seen in person to truly absorb their power. It is challenging and frequently exhausting, but I remember sports being the same way for me. ey demanded dedication, rigor, engagement, physical and mental willpower, and love. ey may leave you feeling spent, but ultimately overjoyed. I still enjoy seeing art, talking about it, struggling with it, and contributing to larger conversations through it. ere is a quote, attributed to the British art team known as Gilbert & George, that best expresses my feelings: "To be with art is all that [I] ask." n
