e list of prospects goes on and on: the seminal course, Advanced British Literature with Jason Tarbath; Advanced English: e Novel from Austen to Wilde with Natalka Freeland; and Advanced Marine Science with Leann Win. ey were all made possible when Trevor moved beyond the AP curriculum in 2015. ree years later, in June of 2018, eight nationally renowned independent schools in the mid-Atlantic region announced their intention to eliminate APs from their curriculums. eir Heads of School wrote in e Washington Post: "When introduced in the early 1950s, the AP program was intended to offer particularly ambitious students an opportunity to pursue and receive credit for college-level work, allowing them to graduate from college early. Yet today, few college students graduate in less than four years. Further, each college has its own policy as to how, or if, credit is awarded for AP tests, with some top schools no longer offering any credit at all. In truth, with nearly 40% of high school students now taking these courses, the AP designation has become less noteworthy to college admissions officers. eories of education have changed significantly over the past 50 years, and the ways we teach and test must reflect these changes. Rote memorization is giving way to learning that is more collaborative, experiential and interdisciplinary—with an increased focus on problem-solving." Remember your friend from college who struggled so mightily with the orgo course during sophomore year? What if they could have taken a version of that course in high school? Trevor students can. Jim Roche's senior course, Advanced Organic Chemistry, was added to our curriculum three years ago. How about that unbelievable interdisciplinary class that your junior year roommate took that combined local history, current events, and environmental policy? Trevor students can take that class, too. Advanced Environmental Studies, taught by Michael Danenberg and David Zheutlin, is a cornerstone of Trevor's Environmental Studies concentration.
