take a course in Ethnic Studies to graduate from the California State University system. When I first arrived at Cypress College more than 20 years ago, we had only four classes in the Ethnic Studies Department. Now we have 16 and we offer seven degrees, with more courses being developed to reflect the department's growth. I was the only full-time professor for 15 years. In 2022, we're going to have three full timers in the department, and I'm really excited. It's been quite a journey. at reminds me of the story about my graduation photo from e Day School. My mother took many pictures of me smiling, except for one; in that photograph, I looked serious. I showed it to Kate Grinnell, who taught photography at e Day School. She said, "is is excellent, use this one. ey've never seen you like this." Years later, I posted that photo on Facebook with this caption: "is is the side of me that I've come to love. e one who's no nonsense, the one who's serious and passionate about what he does." I grew into that person, so that picture was perfect. n Course listings: n American Ethnic Studies n Honors American Ethnic Studies n Introduction to African-American Studies n African-American History I n African-American History II n Introduction to Chicana/o/x Studies n Chicana/o/x History I n Chicana/o/x History II n Chicana/o/x & Latina/o/x Contemporary Issues n Introduction to Native American Studies n Native American History I n Native American History II n Introduction to Asian Pacific American Studies n Asian Pacific American History n Race, Ethnicity, and Popular Culture n American Racial Liberation Movements 5 5 T R E V O R D AY S C H O O L n S U M M E R 2 0 2 1 – 2 0 2 2
