A Mindful Look into Health & Wellness at Trevor On a muggy Saturday morning, a Trevor 12th grader sits in the car with his mom as they make their way to the testing center for the ACT (American College Testing). He mentions feeling anxious about the exam, and his mom recalls something that she recently heard at the Upper School Curriculum Night: To recenter, students start each Health & Wellness class with a mindfulness meditation. She suggests that they do this meditation together before he leaves the car to take the test. Much to her surprise, he agrees. So, they close their eyes, place their right ankle over the left, lock their right hand with their left, and focus on their breath for the next 60 seconds. The meditation ends. He steps out of the car, and his mom is left with the gift of a unique moment of connection with her son. This story touches on the heart of what we hope to accomplish through Trevor's Health & Wellness program: self-aware students with the tools to move through life's most wonderful and challenging moments and connected parents who can accompany them on this journey. Collaborative Leadership Trevor has invested in two new full- time faculty members to trailblaze the Health & Wellness program during the 2022–2023 school year and beyond. We introduce Torrey Lind and Andrew FitzGerald, both of whom bring years of experience in the field and, most importantly, a spirit of connection with all our students. Torrey is currently serving as the Middle School Health & Wellness Teacher. Prior to working at Trevor, Torrey spent six years of her career working in Student Programming and Development on college campuses in Arizona and California. In 2018, she earned an MS degree in Mental Health and Wellness from Grand Canyon University. Torrey relocated to New York City in 2021 and discovered Trevor. She was given the opportunity to create and teach a MiniTerm Health & Wellness course for Middle School students. Since then, she has developed the full-time Health & Wellness curriculum, earned a Certificate in Adolescent Sex Education from Rutgers Graduate School of Applied Psychology, and also teaches the Upper School yoga class.
