kits and high-quality masks that are available at Trevor. And at a glance, 30-50% of public transit riders are still masking up to protect themselves and others in their daily commutes. Middle and Upper School Nurse Deborah McTague affirms this positive shift at Trevor. "COVID changed the way we view illness at school. Parents are asked to be more vigilant in monitoring their children for any signs of COVID, flu, or other viruses, and Trevor's nurses continue to monitor COVID trends and variants and report their findings to the community. When they are feeling ill, students are staying home longer to recover; this is a healthy trend. We continue to work together, as a community, to keep Trevor students, faculty, and staff healthy and safe." In terms of mental health, Director of Middle School Rebecca Damas notes that, "launching Trevor's Health & Wellness program felt more urgent in light of COVID-19 because of the resulting mental health concerns for students who were socially isolated for long stretches." Dr. Jill Klein and Dr. Samantha Loria, Trevor's psychologists, see a widened space carved out to support the mental health of students and families. Together, they share, "We both feel that even though we have seen a rise in the levels of anxious and depressive symptoms since COVID-19, a positive outcome has been an overall normalization in mental health support. The stigma that has previously been associated with both parents and students reaching out to seek intervention and treatment has been reduced greatly. The community seems more willing to take initiative in meeting either their children or themselves where they are and seek help. "Additionally, people have learned that they can be more flexible than perhaps they previously thought. Everyone had to be creative in finding solutions to meet our students' needs, academically, socially, and emotionally. What seemed impossible at the beginning became possible with flexibility, compromise, and understanding. Although we are all still catching up, students have made great strides and progress. "We have always known that children are resilient and the pandemic illustrated this concept perfectly. There were so many meetings and gathered resources related to helping our youngest students adjust to wearing masks. In the end, they seemed to have the least amount of difficulty with it, and were excellent role models for our older students in showing how to follow the safety guidelines." And then, of course, there are massive technological shifts in and out of the classroom. Through sheer necessity, advances in teaching with technology moved at a rapid pace. Some frequently used systems such as Trevor's Portal were mined for any and all additional bandwidth during the pandemic. Programs previously in moderate rotation like Google Workspace were expanded exponentially. And still others like TREVOR DAY SCHOOL / 35 INSIDE TREVOR TREVOR TRANSLATES FEATURE AR TICLES ALUMNI
