in seemingly random data. The course employs an inquiry-based approach. Students develop and use statistical procedures to find the "story" in real-world data. The datasets are relevant to the environment, including 365 days of output from a solar panel installation, 150 years of temperature and precipitation data from Central Park, and life expectancy broken down by country over the last half-century. Advanced Economics provides a survey of microeconomics, macroeconomics, and behavioral economics while also introducing principles of environmental economics. Supply and demand curves are examined for products and stocks as well as for energy. Students complete a case study of the successful retailer Patagonia, exploring the emergence of sustainability trends in multinational corporations. Each student pursuing an Environ- mental Science Concentration chooses their own path. The seniors' Bridge Projects reflect their unique perspectives. Nnyala Stark '23, like Amelia McQuade, worked as a teaching assistant, but at East Bronx Academy. Working with students in an AP Environmental Science course, Nnyala taught them about air pollution, food insecurity, and environmental justice. Layla Yacoubi '23 interned at the Central Park Zoo, where she worked as a Discovery Guide Leader there, teaching student visitors about the animals, leading educational activities, and discussing the importance of conservation. Will Griggs '23 wrote a vegan cookbook, addressing how plant-based diets reduce our environmental impact. In their senior year, the entire cohort works together on a final project. This year, they chose to focus on a proposal to install solar panels on our buildings on both campuses. They formed groups, each charged with making the argument from a different position. One group explained the science of photovoltaic panels and energy production. Another looked at the economic side, estimating the break-even point at which Trevor would recoup its initial investment through reduced energy costs. A final group examined how solar panels could be incorporated into the curriculum for students in all divisions. They presented their proposal to the administration at the end of the year. The solar panels that will hopefully be installed in the future will be their legacy. Having graduated and completed her work in the Lower School, Amelia McQuade will attend Colby College in the fall, where she intends to double major in Education and Environmental Science. Like the other students in the first Environmental Studies Concentration, she will leave Trevor a better place before venturing into the world and helping create a future that is more sustainable and more just for all. Next year, a new group of seniors will form a new cohort earning their Environmental Studies Concentration. This signature program will continue to evolve and set Trevor apart while fulfilling our mission to cultivate "leaders who act as responsible global citizens." n ENVIRONMENTAL STUDIES CONCENTRATION 2023 Ben Appelbaum Jacob Cohen Rachel Eisenhart Em Friedman Will Griggs Nicole Katcher Amelia McQuade Oliver Sacher Nathan Sinaiko Nnyala Stark Gabe Ting Andrew Trestman Aaron Wax Layla Yacoubi 3rd graders at Brooklyn Grange learn to appreciate the role that worms play TREVOR DAY SCHOOL / 59 INSIDE TREVOR TREVOR TRANSLATES FEATURE AR TICLES ALUMNI
