"Brief Reflections on Starting Over" The Heads Letter Published by Educational Directions Incorporated, April 2015 …Here are my reflections as a sitting head, who—after a 15-year headship at Bancroft School, in Worcester, MA—is trying, with humility, to start all over again. In Media Res: It goes without saying that a new head, even one with many years of experience, comes to his new school in the middle of things. One is tossed headlong into the culture, relationships, and history of the place. And the experienced head runs a great risk in believing, however subtly, "I have heard all of this before." Just as philosopher George Santayana was wrong when he held that history repeats itself, so the new head must make sure never to assume that they are experiencing the same matters all over again. Each circumstance, each school culture is unique, and the cardinal rule applies: Listen, truly listen… …At root, remember that the driving force of all schools should be the needs of children… …For whatever reason, this is what you wanted...the challenge of a new school...the process of meeting your calling, and discovering more about yourself over time. So, most of all, be your genuine self. It's worked in the past, and is your best guide for the future…. "Coeducation at Trevor" Trevor Thursday Digest, November 16, 2017 …In a community committed to celebrating diversity of thought, experiences, and culture, coeducation is diversity in its simplest sense. We live and operate in a different world from our parents and grandparents, in terms of social and gender norms, and all around us old misconceptions and divisions based upon gender roles are disappearing. Our curriculum and program advance the dignity of each child, the equality of all people, and opportunities for children to express their personhood in a safe environment, devoid of prejudice and replete with acceptance for the unique gifts that each brings. We celebrate gender expression in all its forms—and the school community is stronger because of it… "Ambitious Academics, Engaged Students, and Balanced Lives" Trevor Magazine, Winter 2018–2019 …Academic challenge and engagement are essential to who we are, but equally important is the fact that Trevor students are encouraged (and empowered) to lead balanced lives. This is not always easy in New York City, or anywhere, for that matter. Aspiring to raise children who are healthy in body and mind requires a certain equilibrium. This commitment starts at home, and depends upon resources and support throughout a child's life, especially in school. It requires expert teachers, who can masterfully impart a college-prep curriculum and utilize homework as an aide, not an albatross. It demands thoughtful health and wellness curricula and easy access to teachers and advisors for guidance. It needs schedules that allow students to pursue art and play sports, if they wish, or participate in more than one club or activity. And it is furthered by dedicated spaces for connection and wellness—such as our Common Rooms and our new community garden on the East 95th Street rooftop. This oasis, designed by alum parent Maya Lin P'16 P'17, is itself the architectural embodiment of balance. The lessons we teach here aren't just about history or math—they have to do with community and responsibility to oneself, too. These pillars of ambitious academics, engaged students, and balanced lives intersect and complement each other, leading to well-rounded and purpose-driven graduates who leave for college with the intellect, problem- solving skills, and confidence to make waves where they are most needed… TREVOR DAY SCHOOL / 43 INSIDE TREVOR TREVOR TRANSLATES FEATURE AR TICLES ALUMNI
