M I D D L E S C H O O L Trevor Translates: An Unparalleled Advisory Program Supported by a Signature Space by Anna Chan Rekate, Middle School English Teacher and 8th-grade Advisor, and contributor Roxy G., Class of 2028 I love walking into the 5th-floor Common Room and seeing students doing the New York Times crossword, solving their Rubik's Cubes, or playing chess. And when I see a group of students huddled over a math problem, I remind myself that this is what the Common Room is all about. If you want to come over and chat about your new favorite book, the nerdy English teacher side of me blooms in full force. But if you insist that the Red Sox or the Mets are your team of choice, I may question your sanity. And as much as I love my English classes, I can't imagine a scenario other than Advisory time when I would learn that Chloe A. '28 and her family own peacocks. Yes, peacocks. During the height of Wordle-mania, Roy G. '26 greeted me with "Did you get today's Wordle?" instead of "Good morning." And when I got Wordle on the first try, Roy was the first person I told. All these interactions occur because of Trevor's Advisory Program and the culture that the Middle School Common Room breed. When I'm not in class, you'll find me at my desk, grading papers or chatting with students about their essays or classes. Recently, some of these meetings have been interrupted by Augusta S.-C. '28 as she tries to convince anyone who will listen that Britney Spears is better than Taylor Swift. It's been going on for weeks now. For months, last year, I heard all about Lexi G. '27's bat mitzvah planning and how she was going to share the spotlight with her younger sister, Roxy '28, during their joint celebration. This year, I still get to hear details about life in the family because I have Roxy as my advisee. It's always fun to have siblings as advisees, and it's a joy to see families as their children go through the different divisions at Trevor.
