Deanna: Why did you choose to work at Trevor? Mr. Feigin: I chose to work at Trevor because of my experience as a student and how much I loved it. This school taught me to love school. I literally never missed a day of school because I was worried I might miss something great. A lot of people that I knew who went to other schools didn't feel that much affection for school. But I always loved it. It was a place I always wanted to be, and I was really lucky that a school setting was the place where I felt most comfortable. So, I thought, "Let me try it out. Let me try teaching." And the more I taught and the more I coached, the more comfortable it felt. It brings me a lot of happiness. I laugh a lot during the day. Arthur: Why did you want to be the Head of School at Trevor? Mr. Feigin: I thought the Head of School position would be ideal because you get to be in contact with everyone at the school. I get to meet with community members from Lower School to Middle School to Upper School; I get to meet with parents; I get to meet with groups of faculty to talk about things we're doing here at Trevor; and best of all, I'm connected to students. I like the kind of day where I come into contact with many different people and talk about a variety of important topics. I've always really liked that, and the Head of School position really helps me try to understand everything that's going on in the school, and support everyone in different ways. I like the opportunities I have. Sometimes I spend half the day on the West Campus and half on the East Campus so that I have the greatest possible exposure to Trevor. I love that. Deanna: Are you making any changes to the school this year? Mr. Feigin: One thing that I've been a part of over the last few years is thinking about our signature programs—programs that we do really well. For example, we have an Environmental Studies Program where we think about the health of our planet and how we can best prepare our students to make an impact in that field. We have a Health & Wellness Program we are further developing to ensure that in our community everybody is as healthy as possible, both mentally and physically. We also have a Global Education Program, where we want to make sure that all students have the opportunity to travel outside of the US and learn about the world in person. Deanna: Do you have to travel? Mr. Feigin: No, you don't have to, but we want to make sure everybody has the opportunity. Arthur: Who was the first head of Trevor? Mr. Feigin: His name was Thomas Mansfield, and he was the Head of Trevor when I was in the Lower School. So I knew him. I've known every Head of Trevor up to Scott Reisinger, and now me, of course. Arthur: So, you knew them all! Wow! But of course, you knew Mr. Reisinger. Mr. Feigin: I was very lucky to work closely with Mr. Reisinger over the previous nine years. Arthur: What is your favorite part of your job? Mr. Feigin: Coming into contact with students and having time to do things like this interview. This is pretty cool. We get an opportunity to do this because we are part of the same, close-knit school community. Arthur: What is your single favorite Trevor event? Mr. Feigin: I have to say, the part that is most emotional for me is Commencement. When students graduate—because I've been here so Then an English teacher, Mr. Feigin leads a discussion of the novel Goodbye, Columbus. 36 / TREVOR MAGAZINE WINTER 2023–24
