32 / TREVOR MAGAZINE FALL 2024–25 L O W E R S C H O O L Trevor Translates: by Emily Riggins, 2nd-grade Head Teacher and Lower School DEI Director and Summer Syphax, 1st-grade Head Teacher and Lower School DEI Director "Mosaic has taught me a lot about how to have empathy for others and how to put myself in other people's shoes. The lessons are all different, but there are a lot of things that teach you more about compassion and empathy," says 4th grader Emily A. But what is Trevor's Mosaic curriculum? To answer this question, we need to first consider what a mosaic is—an artwork created with a multitude of small pieces of tile that, when joined together, create a bigger picture. Similarly, Trevor's Mosaic curriculum is made up of hundreds of students from Threes to 12th grade, along with the teachers who wrote the curriculum, coming together to create a beautiful image of our community. Trevor's school-wide identity education curriculum teaches "how you treat people and how to be a good friend," according to 2nd grader Daniel K. In the Lower School, we focus on building the student's social-emotional skills to help them navigate the world and develop into strong global citizens. These Lower School lessons also provide the foundation for the deeper conversations the students will have throughout their Middle and Upper School experience. The Development and Implementation of Mosaic This program is unique in that it spans from Threes to 12th grade, creating a bridge across grades, divisions, and even Central Park. The curriculum was written and developed by Trevor faculty during the 2022–23 school year.
