40 / TREVOR MAGAZINE FALL 2024–25 – Feature Article – QUANTIFYING THE "A" IN STEAM: What Role Does Arts Education Play in Trevor Students' Development? by Jennifer Rathbone, Upper School Performing Arts Teacher and Advisor, Production Manager, 9th-Grade Dean, and Performing Arts Department Chair According to Molly Litvin '21, "Sometimes, I think the most effective lessons are those you don't even realize you have learned until you come across someone who hasn't yet learned them. The performing arts at Trevor is a perfect example of how we put theory into practice and take the time and space to work on our craft and personal growth." Molly is currently enrolled in NYU's Tisch School of the Arts Production and Design Studio, but has continued to dedicate time and energy to the arts at Trevor. This spring, she hosted a project-based workshop series in Applied Theatre for Ms. Rathbone's 9th- and 10th- grade Theatre Design and Production classes. She also collaborated with Trevor's Technical Director to lend a hand in the construction of the Upper School musical set design, acted as an on-call set technician, and even played in the pit band as a guest drummer for the Spring 2024 production of Alice by Heart. A graduate of Fordham University (BA in Theological Studies, summa cum laude) and now a Fellow of Law and Public Service, studying at the University of Virginia School of Law (and devoted EMT), Henry Maquire '18 was a talented student of both Trevor's theatre production and video arts programs. During his time in Upper School, there were few performances he did not help produce. Reflecting on the impact of that part of his education, he said, "I concluded 12th grade with a well- developed ability to collaborate with people different from myself, and a much greater appreciation for art Drama classes learn to create tableaus as captured in still frames of character work.
