"
I coached basketball on many levels, both boys and girls, and for many
decades. Thinking about it now prompts a flood of fond memories.
Coaching is perhaps the most demanding kind of teaching because you
get quick (and often blunt) feedback on how well you are doing every time
your team takes the court with the scoreboard on. One of the great things
about team sports—and specifically basketball—is that a better organized
team can frequently beat a team with more natural talent. Winning is
great, but the deeper satisfaction comes from seeing your team work as a
unit, with the whole becoming greater than the sum of its parts. Ultimately,
it's about trust within the team, for the coach and all the players. The
satisfaction everyone gets when that works is what I remember best.
