Upper School Science Teachers Esteban
Monserrate and Jim Roche attended a
full-day master class in October, through
Academy for Teachers. Environmental leader
Bill McKibben shared insights from his new
book, Here Comes the Sun: A Last Chance for
the Climate and a Fresh Chance for Civilization,
which focuses on solar power, climate
anxiety, and collective action.
The American Geographical Society and
Columbia Climate School accepted the
proposal of Jim Roche, Upper School
Science Teacher and Advisor, to present
a 5-minute lightning talk on the use of
AI in the Classroom at their Future of AI
Symposium on November 20th at Columbia
University. https://www.geography2050.org/
Lauren Portada, Upper School Visual Arts Teacher and Advisor,
reported that, in April and May of 2025, Deanna Evans Projects
presented The Story of My Teeth, a solo exhibition of her new
paintings, at the Deanna Evans Gallery in Tribeca. Created
primarily in the stillness before midday, the paintings are shaped
in moments of quiet introspection. They conjure tender spaces
featuring ordinary objects: a peeled banana, a cat mid-grooming,
birch bark curling from a tree, a bowl of baby teeth. Each becomes
a possibility for reflection on exposure, gentleness, and the
intimate act of seeing.
