24 / TREVOR MAGAZINE WINTER 2025–26 L O W E R S C H O O L Trevor Translates: Learning in Motion by Andy Wilson, Director of Lower School Did the last few words give it away? If not, I suggest you ask your youngest child. Students who came through the Lower School will instantly recognize them as the names of green spaces and playgrounds that they frequented during recess in Central Park. Some names originated with the Central Park Conservancy, but over time many others have been named by our generations of running, jumping, and playing Trevor kids during their many trips to these plentiful resources. At Trevor, we think of Central Park as our extended campus; a place where movement, play, and learning come together within this vast expanse at the heart of Manhattan. Just steps away from the West Campus, we use this incredible resource each day, both for learning and fun. In addition to the mathematical algorithms, graphic organizers, science experiments, word sorts, character studies, and many more learning tools that our students explore to scaffold knowledge and develop critical- thinking skills, outdoor experiences are a primary ingredient in this mix. Employed within a daily balance of other activities, Trevor's outdoor play helps to build strong bodies and imaginative minds; our students grow as complete people, ready to move and learn in equal measure, frequently at the same time. In addition to sun-given vitamin D, fairy houses, workouts, scrapes, and grass stains our students get from their time outside, the child-led autonomy of a pickup soccer, Wiffle ball, or a four-square match is an invaluable opportunity for students to For those who enjoy a quick game while making your way across town, I'm going to pitch a single round of Connections, in which you must pick out the common thread that seemingly disparate words or phrases might share. Here you go: wild west; volcano; salad bowl; hippo; toll; pinetum; spector; acorn alley; tarr.
