JOSEPH ULITTO Upper School French Teacher & Advisor (1991–2026) Joseph Ulitto, one of the founding members of Trevor's Upper School and our very first Upper School French teacher, retired at the end of the 2025–26 school year. From the beginning, Mr. Ulitto demonstrated a remarkable gift for languages and for teaching. He has a special talent for helping students communicate in French and feel successful—even when they are just beginning and working at the most basic levels. His classroom has always been a place where students build confidence, take risks, and discover that they are capable of more than they thought possible. Although he has focused on French for many years, earlier in his career at Trevor he also taught Spanish I, Italian, and Latin. Over the years, Mr. Ulitto has served the school in many other important roles. He was one of the first Upper School deans and later served as the curriculum coordinator for the Language Department. Throughout his career at Trevor, he has also been deeply involved in student life through numerous clubs and programs, including Multiple Identities, One World (MIOW), Queers and Allies/Gay- Straight Alliance, Amnesty International, Global Concerns, and Peer Leadership. Mr. Ulitto is widely recognized as a leader in diversity, equity, and inclusion work. More than thirty years ago, he was one of the teachers who founded MIOW. He later served as a Director of Diversity and subsequently as a DEI director. In addition, he generously shared his expertise with faculty and staff by leading professional workshops, such as National Coalition Building Institute (NCBI), where he provided tools and strategies to help cultivate an inclusive environment at Trevor—one in which every individual feels heard, respected, and empowered. Mr. Ulitto is an upstander. He doesn't stay safe and quiet in the face of injustice. He will find a way to support, educate, and protest. He truly sees you. He sees your humanity. He values our differences, and when necessary, with kindness and empathy, he helps you open your mind and your heart to those who are different from you. Although Mr. Ulitto will retire at the end of this year, his legacy of dedication, generosity, and kindness will remain an enduring part of the Trevor community—in the programs he helped establish and in the countless lives he has touched as a teacher, mentor, ally, colleague, and friend.
