Dawn Anderson, College Counseling Associate and Associate Director of Diversity, was accepted into the inaugural 2017–2018 Justice, Equity & Diversity Institute (J.E.D.I.) cohort program, which is sponsored by NYSAIS. is new, yearlong program aims to equip its participants to advance the work of justice, equity, and diversity in schools. Nathan Birkey, Grades 6–8 Music Teacher, toured in Italy over the 2017 spring break. He performed with a number of Italian musicians in a series of 10 concerts over 12 days. e tour ended in Rome—where he recorded a new studio album that will be released this year. e recording features Mr. Birkey on both trumpet and vocals, Roberto Tarenzi on piano, Alessandro Marzi on drums, Luca Bulgarelli on bass, and Nicola Stilo on flute. e song selections include three original compositions, various Italian tunes, and jazz standards. e album will be Mr. Birkey's 10th as a lead performer. Rebecca Lancaster and Laura Rose, both Grades 6–8 Mathematics Teachers, were awarded a grant for rewriting portions of the current mathematics curricula and creating the accelerated math course curricula for 6th and 7th grades. Meg Myette, Grades 6–8 Chorus Teacher and Health and Wellness Coordinator, completed her level-three, 150-hour Little Flower Yoga teacher training and is now a certified children's yoga and mindfulness teacher. Jennifer Rathbone, Grades 6–12 Performing Arts Teacher, Production Manager, and Class of 2020 Dean, became a certified RYT (registered yoga teacher) with 200 hours. She continues Faculty Bulletins her studies in yoga, philosophy, asana, and meditation. Emily Reese, Upper School Academic Support, received her PhD in psychology at Columbia University, as well as her postdoctoral fellowship—all before the birth of her son last year. Dr. Reese also passed her New York State licensing exam in clinical psychology. Micah Schaffer, Grades 9–12 Video Arts Teacher, directed and produced the short documentary 48 Hours of Resistance. Made in conjunction with the New York Immigration Coalition, the film premiered on July 28, 2017, at the Brooklyn Academy of Music. Also, the feature film script White, which Mr. Schaffer cowrote, was recently selected for the Tribeca Film Festival's All Access program. Emmett Smith, Grades 9–12 Drama Teacher, officiated at the wedding ceremony of one of his former students. Selena McMahan '01 married Derek Rookhuizen on May 21, 2017. e ceremony took place by a scenic lake in Putnam Valley, New York. (See Class Happenings for a shot of the wedding.) Laura Spalding, Grades 9–12 Spanish Teacher, received two acting awards for the play is Long Entire Night, from HOLA (Hispanic Organization of Latin Actors) and from ACE NY. Jacki Bissu, Lower School Admissions Officer, was surprised when baby Bissu number three joined the family with an early arrival. William (Will) Sam Bissu was born on March 28, 2017, at 8:49 pm. He weighed 8.5 lbs and measured 21 in. long. e Bissus are enjoying being a family of five—big sister Olivia and big brother Benjamin are taking their new roles seriously! Kevin Doherty, Lower and Middle School Physical Education Teacher, and his wife, Elaine, welcomed their son, Kian, who arrived on April 22, 2017, at 11:12 pm. He weighed in at 7 lbs, 12 oz. Births Claudia Folgar, Kindergarten Head Teacher, welcomed sweet little Éamonn Santiago Cooney, who was born under a pink full moon on April 12, 2017, at 8:13 pm, after 41 weeks and four days.
