School News 0 8 T R E V O R D AY S C H O O L n FA L L 2 0 1 7 – 2 0 1 8 Brain-to-Brain Synergy at Trevor Trevor's partnership with NYU began three years ago, when Trevor parent and neuroscientist David Poeppel and post- doctoral researcher Suzanne Dikker proposed a collaborative study on what happens in the brains of students when they are learning in the classroom. is was the very first study to look at brain waves in a classroom setting—Trevor students were able to experience the cutting edge of neuroscience research. e results were published in the journal Current Biology in May 2017 and have been written up in a number of media outlets, including the LA Times and Smithsonian Magazine. Sashie Cephas '15, a current undergrad at Vassar who participated in the study as part of Trevor's Advanced Biology class says, "It felt pretty awesome to be part of a published study, especially now that I'm beginning to do higher-level research in college. Being able to experience a small slice of how large-scale experiments work has really helped my ability to tackle my own research at Vassar." Wondering what the Advanced Biology students are up to this school year? Well, zombies, of course. e class continues to focus on neuroscience, and most recently studied what goes wrong in diseased brains. To drive the learning home, students participated in a virtual visit from Dr. Timothy Verstynen of Carnegie Mellon, who uses zombies to get people excited about neuroscience. Why can't zombies remember their loved ones? Why are they so aggressive? Why are they always hungry? Dr. Verstynen listened to Trevor students present their answers to these questions, and walked them through recent advances in brain science. Now you know who to call when the zombie apocalypse starts! John omas B. '22 Won #1 Overall Singles at NYCAL Tournament Although JT was only a 7th grader at the time, his tennis ability was unbeatable throughout Trevor's 2016–2017 Varsity Boys Tennis season. In mid-May, JT brought his talent to the NYCAL League Tournament in Queens. His first match was against Columbia Prep's senior captain, their #1 singles player. JT overpowered his opponent with his massive forehand and won the match, 6–1. In what would be JT's most difficult game of the tournament, Browning's #1 singles player demonstrated an array of skills and pushed the match to a hair-raising finale. JT outplayed his formidable opponent and won this match as well, 6–5. JT went on to beat Lycée Français, 6–2 and UNIS 6–1, en route to winning this year's NYCAL #1 Singles Player Championship.
