With enough interest in any given sport, Trevor is able to field multiple teams, with one team playing a tougher schedule at a faster pace, while a second team is more skill-based— playing fewer games, and helping more novice players develop over time. e increase in participation of Trevor's student-athletes in Middle School strengthens the higher-level athletics programs as well. Students who play on both Trevor teams and club teams outside of school will have years of experience. ey will also have years of bonding with fellow Trevor teammates by the time they reach Junior Varsity and Varsity level teams. e schedule also has a positive impact on current Junior Varsity and Varsity teams. With Middle School practices and games scheduled earlier in the day, the Varsity and JV teams are able to make better use of Trevor's state-of- the-art facilities. Teams can use the courts and fields for practices during more convenient hours, and can have longer practices, when needed. anks to the Middle School Athletics and PE shift, students do not have to choose between piano lessons and soccer. Trevor student- athletes can do both. e program has significant academic benefits as well. Mr. Stolzberg notes that early dismissal is one of the greatest challenges across all of New York City's educational institutions. Student-athletes often miss their last period of class because of commitments and transportation to games. By altering the school-day schedule to include PE and athletics as a last-period class, early dismissal is eliminated for the Middle School student-athletes. e earlier schedule also gives Middle School students more time to dedicate to schoolwork after practice and other commitments. For those who choose to not participate in a Middle School sports team during one or more seasons, the physical education department offers a robust assortment of electives from which to select. is year, the offerings include hockey, European handball, fencing, sports medicine, tennis, and fitness, among many others. e diversity of electives allows students to experience a broad range of physical activities and gain foundational experience in several team sports. n
