Nina Rosenblatt, Grades 9–12 History Chair, and David omas, Grades 9–12 History, presented a workshop entitled "Breaking the Mold: Addressing Stereotypes and Preconceptions in World History" at a symposium hosted by St. Ann's and Poly Prep this spring. e symposium brought together college and high school teachers who teach world history. Keynote speakers were Gyan Prakash and Stephen Kotkin from Princeton University. John Liepold, Grades 9–12 Music Department Chair, was recently invited back to the University of Virginia in Charlottesville, to conduct the 145th anniversary concert of the Virginia Glee Club. (Liepold was conductor for this group in the nineties). e concert included the current glee club and some 200 alumni, spanning seven decades. Tim Otto, Grades 9–12 Music, has been studying advanced music theory at the Julliard School. is academic year, both semesters were taught by Julliard's esteemed professor, Dr. Samuel Zyman (pictured, above right), a longtime faculty member and a well- known composer. e courses have helped immensely in the development of Trevor's music theory curriculum— which is a constant, ongoing process— and they bring new material and teaching methods in music theory to all our students, from the introductory level through college prep. eory has always been incorporated into Trevor's music classes, but it's only in the past few years that it has become its own, dedicated class. ere are currently three levels of mixed-grade classes offered: beginning, intermediate, and advanced. ey cover the rudiments of music, advancing to more complex harmony and composition. Independent study is also available for seniors and advanced students. Mr. Otto has found great pleasure and satisfaction in these courses; he hopes to complete the full Julliard curriculum sometime next year. Trevor's professional development program supplemented the cost. She is over the moon with excitement! Margaux Lynam, Grade 5 Mathematics and Science, attended the annual National Council of Teachers of Mathematics (NCTM) Conference in San Francisco this spring. Births Rebecca Damas, Director of Middle School, and her husband, Raul, welcomed baby boy Andrew Ryan Damas into the world on March 5, 2016. He weighed 9 lbs 2 oz. Michelle Wu, Grade 1 Head Teacher, and her husband, Peter Buchenholz '85, welcomed baby boy Emmett Serin Wu-Buchenholz into the world on April 19, 2016. He weighed 8 lbs 12 oz. Micah Schaffer, Grades 6–12 Video Arts, and his wife welcomed their daughter, Salma Isabel de Senna Schaffer, into the world early afternoon on Memorial Day. She weighed 7 lbs 12 oz. Salma's big brother, Gael, was present during the birth. Marriages Catherine McIntyre, Lower School Physical Education, married Michael Karol on December 5, 2015.
