on a rhyme that we improvised, moved, created, and shared. e final product was astounding, but the process even more so. • A session on the Underground Railroad moved us to tears. We explored the history of the Underground Railroad through rhyme, rhythm, song, and movement. Sadness and despair, suffering and sorrow, love and judgement, grace and hope, justice and mercy—all of these emotions are mirrored in the texts of the spiritual melodies, which have come to be some of the most beautiful expressions of human existence. I'm grateful to be an Orff-Schulwerk educator, and even more so to implement my learning in a school that is so supportive and aligned with this approach. It has significantly impacted my teaching, and therefore, our students." Jamie McClintock, Grades 9–12 Science Teacher, tells us, "I was appointed to a curriculum advisory board at NYU. We are helping to guide a curriculum initiative called BrainWaves, which brings the experience of brain research into the high school classroom. e curriculum is based on the neuroscience research that happened here at Trevor, which is currently being implemented at nine Title 1 schools around New York City. rough their participation in the program, schools gain access to state-of-the-art scientific equipment, and a team of scientific experts to guide them through the process of designing and executing an original scientific experiment. Our biggest challenge at the moment is figuring out how to extend the program beyond the five-year NIH grant that currently provides funding. In the long term, we hope to grow the program to make sure that every student in NYC has access to a first-hand experience of scientific research before they graduate high school." Clodagh McCloskey, Grade 3 Teacher, also completed the Writing Revolution program. is past summer, she and Spiro used a grant to create the sustainability project for the 3rd grade. Mary Moran, Grade 4 Teacher, also completed the Writing Revolution teacher training in the Hochman Method of writing. She later attended a second conference called, Learning and the Brain: Fostering Growth Mindset in Readers. SAIL participants benefit from a combined 50 years of teaching theatre and dance. Laurie Roth and Emmett Smith are taking their life's work into a new format, with a lively and engaging program that culminates in a devised performance. Participants will be actors, dancers, writers, and innovators. e program allows and encourages them to develop their own creative voices, shape their own experience, and grow as artists and people. www.stampandrave.com Valeska Stupak, Pre-K Associate Teacher, attended the 17th Annual NYSAIS Summer Residency in Successful Classroom Management, which was held at e Trinity-Pawling School in Pawling, NY, from August 15th to the 18th. e four-day program offered a comprehensive, practical overview of effective teaching skills and tactics, with sessions on classroom strategies, workplace relationships, and administration, diversity, learning styles and learning differences, and differentiated instruction.
