I was so anxious and nervous about doing a great job that I didn't sleep the night before. Being a balloon handler has been on my bucket list forever, as I have participated in Carnival, both in Rio de Janeiro and San Francisco. Although great fun, neither experience compared with walking down Central Park West and seeing the children's and adults' smiles, anticipation, and sense of wonder, and hearing their cheers. People were so eager to return to our "old normal"; their energy and excitement were contagious and exhilarating. It was one of my life's highlights! ank you, Captain Susan and Macy's for allowing me to be a part of this unforgettable day! Esteban MonserratE, Esteban MonserratE, Grades 9-12 Science Teacher I had never seen the parade, either live or on television, but I wanted to participate this year because it marked a comeback from the pandemic. I also thought that it would be a great way to interact with Trevor faculty and staff. As I dressed in the balloon handler's costume, I felt a bit silly. But as soon as we turned onto Central Park West and the families with children were cheering for SpongeBob, the parade's significance became clear. It was magical. My fellow balloon handlers, captains, and the pilot made the experience great fun for all of us. I am really happy that I volunteered.
