W hen we returned to in-person learning in fall 2020, the gift of being able to communicate and interact with the students face-to- face cannot be overstated; it was an incredible high point. e students were so happy and grateful to be around each other again—as were our teachers and coaches. Space was at a premium on the East Campus, so we managed in-person PE there by taking students outside as frequently as possible and continuing to utilize Dragon's Fitness Club for the hybrid elements of the 2020–2021 school year. Getting outside, moving their bodies, and taking short mask breaks were definitely good for students physically, but equally important (if not more so) for them mentally. We spoke early and often as an Athletics department about how our role as coaches would shift for the 2020–2021 school year. In such an extraordinary year, we knew the emotional and social well-being of our athletes had to remain paramount, and the way that we approached sports would need to change. It became less about preparing our athletes for competitions against other teams and more about helping them remain active and building up their individual skills. An essential element to our approach also involved recognizing the structure and connection we would provide. With the return to athletics, we t imeline for our steady climb to a new normal: Spring 2020 Virtual meetings and trainings sessions. No competitions. Summer 2020 Virtual summer camp. Fall 2020–Winter 20/21 In-person and virtual skills training and practices offered. No competitions. Spring 2021 In-person practices. Scrimmages against other schools. Fall 2021 In-person trainings and practices. Interscholastic competitions. Indoor fans return mid-season. Winter 2021 In-person trainings and practices. Interscholastic competitions. were once again an important part of a student-athlete's daily schedule, and time with coaches and teammates needed to be a reliable and consistent touchstone. In terms of the restrictions that came with in-person programming, our mantra was to be over- prepared. We went above and beyond the recommended COVID-19 safety protocols. We outfitted the department with electronic spray sanitizers, large tarps to lay out equipment, and appropriate equipment capable of withstanding the sanitizers. Most importantly, in order to limit exposure, the Athletics staff exhaustively planned for and orchestrated every detail from the moment a student arrived to the moment they left the building. Our dedicated Athletics and coaching staff operated like rock stars—some behind the scenes, preparing spaces for the next group to enter; others were front and center on the courts and fields. 2 4 T R E V O R D AY S C H O O L n W I N T E R 2 0 2 1 – 2 0 2 2
