Holocaust Remembrance Trip is spring, seniors were invited to participate in a Global Program trip to learn about the Holocaust in situ. e trip, designed as a cultural and historical experience, began with a Bridge seminar centered on studying the Holocaust through a literary lens; students read e Boy in the Striped Pajamas by John Boyne, Maus I and Maus II by Art Spiegelman, and e Night Trilogy: Night/Dawn/Day by Elie Wiesel. ey also watched several documentaries, all vital to preparing students for their journey. e group of ten students spent four weeks in the seminar before embarking upon their experience of four days each in Munich, Prague, and Berlin. Dacel Casey, Grades 6–12 Library Media Specialist and Director of Community and Global Partnerships, organized and managed the trip. She shares, "We wanted our trip to focus on three concentration camps: Dachau, just outside of Munich, Auschwitz (to many, the symbol of the Holocaust), and Sachsenhausen (just outside of Berlin). Unfortunately, due to the war in Ukraine and its proximity to Poland, we couldn't visit Auschwitz. Instead, we visited Terezín (a small village and camp just outside of Prague)." is trip, now slated to be offered annually, is a part of Trevor's growing Global Program, through which Ms. Casey plans to host a series of international and domestic experiences open to all Upper School students who want to participate. is specific trip is designed to be one of three experiences offered to 12th-grade students during their Bridge terms going forward. Given the grim nature of the itinerary, the group discussed self-care methods, along with what to expect and appropriate behavior when visiting the concentration camps. After each visit, the group planned a day for students and chaperones to take time to process the experience, with the option of relaxing at the hotel or exploring the city. anks to this preparation, Ms. Casey and the group found they could balance the tone and effect of the experience. Next year, if the political climate permits, the Holocaust remembrance trip will include visits to Warsaw and Auschwitz. 1 9 T R E V O R D AY S C H O O L n SUMMER 2 0 2 1 – 2 0 2 2
