Trevor Tutors Trevor Tutors connects Upper School students with 4th and 5th graders through free weekly tutoring sessions. ese sessions, typically held via Zoom, cover all subjects and topics and are available to both tackle challenges and enrich existing skills and strengths. Here, two students who worked together this year share their perspective on participating in the Trevor Tutors program. Dagan P.D. '29 When I first joined Trevor Tutors, I was excited to get to learn more about math, which I really enjoy. When I entered the Zoom call on the first day, I met my tutor, Lizzy Rekate. After we introduced ourselves, we started practicing math. Instead of completing a boring worksheet each week, she played games with me, like multiplication bingo. And, in the weeks that followed, she always made sure to ask me about my school day and learn more about me. But, all good things must come to an end, and we finished our sessions after four months of tutoring. To celebrate, I got Lizzy a gift and she got me one. e gifts we each got for each other really matched who we are; for example, she got me a Squidward plushie which was connected to my role in Trevor's 2022 MiniTerm musical, SpongeBob SquarePants. I knew that Lizzy loves baking, so I got her molds for giant cupcakes. In the time that Lizzy was tutoring me I learned how to really bond with someone who is almost double my age. And, in the end, I became an expert on my multiplication tables and aced my test on fractions! Lizzy Rekate '22 I initially joined the Trevor tutoring program at the beginning of my junior year, during which I helped a few students with Spanish. is year, I continued the program expecting the same experience, but instead I got something even more fun while working with Dagan for his 5th-grade math class. Because math is not my favorite subject, I was unsure if I would actually be effective in helping Dagan. However, we ended up working well together, and I learned how to make the most of each session by starting with his homework or classwork, then having a fun activity to wrap up the day. Working with Dagan was also a nice respite from all of the calculus I would tackle each week, and he always had fun stories to share with me about his life. I also gained valuable experience in helping someone who is significantly younger than I. As a writing advisor in the Upper School, I had only worked with peers my age, so tutoring Dagan helped me develop my skills to work with younger students, not just classmates. Toward the end of our sessions together, unbeknownst to either of us, we both got little gifts to thank each other for the awesome experience. During our sessions, Dagan played Squidward as part of the Lower School MiniTerm musical, SpongeBob SquarePants, so I decided to get him a Squidward stuffed animal. In turn, he got me an extra-large cupcake pan, which was such a sweet gesture and something that I will use again and again.
