L O W E R S C H O O L Trevor Translates: Lower School AfterSchool Program by Lisa Goldberg, Director of Auxiliary Programs Trevor's AfterSchool program is the antithesis of an afterthought; we are a school within itself. In the Lower School alone, 150 students are currently enrolled. In addition, we have Middle and Upper School students in our thriving Martial Arts Program and another 150 students in our Arts Conservatory. Each trimester, we offer competitive, exciting, and diverse classes. Trevor parents have no need to take their child to an outside dance, martial arts class, music lesson, or soccer after school. And full-time working parents especially appreciate that we run Monday through Friday from 3:00–6:00 pm. Friendships formed in AfterSchool are special because they are often across grade levels—Nursery–1st-grade students are grouped together, while another group is for 2nd- through 5th-grade students. Trevor's buddy system, where older students help their younger peers, is already familiar to students of all ages, as it's often incorporated into a Trevor school day. So, it's natural to continue this in AfterSchool, where it helps develop additional big brother and big sister relationships. After the school day concludes, attendees are escorted by their teachers to AfterSchool, where they socialize, eat a snack, and continue their afternoon. AfterSchool's main program is called ENCORE. Students can attend Core before or after specialized classes, or on its own. Students play and interact in a relaxed atmosphere, much like a playdate. They may enjoy free play or an organized group activity with our AfterSchool teachers. Every day, before or after their specialized classes, older students may elect to tackle their homework in a supervised and quiet environment. Specialized classes change based primarily on students' interests. Our classes with the highest registration have consistently been Basketball, Chess, Cooking, Drama Dragons, Hip-Hop, Mad Science, Martial Arts, Rollerblading, Skateboarding, Soccer, and Tennis. Some of our newest classes include Golf, Gymnastics, Lego Robotics, MakerSpace, and Stand-Up Comedy. 22 / TREVOR MAGAZINE WINTER 2022–2023
