DON'T FORGET: IT'S A PLAY! EXPLORING "A MIDSUMMER NIGHT'S DREAM" AS A PIECE OF THEATRE Shakespeare's works were never meant to be read on the page; his plays were created to be experienced as live theatre. In this class, Sarah Paton, Middle School English Teacher, demonstrated the ways that Shakespeare embedded stage directions and characterization within his text. Working with A Midsummer Night's Dream, students learned about operative words and experimented with gestures, bringing these beloved characters to life. Exploring Genetics with Reebops! Reebops (marshmallow creatures who live in discarded soda cans in Central Park) get trapped in a room and reproduce, creating a generation of offspring. Meghan McDonough, Middle School Science Teacher, shows students how to collect data on several Reebop traits and draw inferences about the inheritance pattern of each trait. This hands-on genetics activity is a favorite lesson of 8th-grade science students, and Trevor parents couldn't agree more! Printmaking Parlor Game Upper School Visual Arts Teacher Stephanie Knowles guided students in the creation of a collaborative collagraph print. (Collagraphy is a printmaking process in which materials are applied to a rigid substrate to compose a dimensional collage. Ink is applied to the collage, the "printing plate," and is used to print onto paper with pressure from either a press or hand tools.) It was a fun, hands-on lesson that introduced students to collage, composition, printmaking, and even some art history. Everyone left with a fantastic print, jointly made.
