Director of Alumni Relations, Mason Stark '84, recently interviewed Daniel Feigin '84. They were classmates and friends at The Day School. "I remember meeting Dan on our first day of Nursery in 1973! Obviously, three-year-olds don't retain many such memories, but this was a major event in our young lives. I recall standing in the threshold of the doorway and looking back at our respective mothers on the sidewalk. They were both bathed in sunlight. With a look between us that must have communicated, "This is HUGE," Dan and I turned and headed upstairs—thus taking our first steps in becoming independent individuals. We became friends that day. For the next 11 years, Dan and I shared hundreds more events in our daily lives as Day School students. One of the most memorable: We were both on the undefeated 8th-grade Varsity Basketball team in 1984. Today, in addition to being alums from the Class of 1984, we are both current Trevor parents. Dan is P '26 and I'm P '27 and P '32. Clearly, when something works, we both stick with it! To say that Mr. Feigin becoming the next Head of the School is a big deal for our Alumni Association is an understatement of colossal magnitude. This is a first that can't be replicated." Q: Legend has it that as a child you told your mother you wanted to be a Head of School. Do you recall when you first thought this, and why? A: I was lucky to have a group of smart, passionate, and funny school heads in my academic career, and I always thought it was such a cool job. I loved the fact that a school head has constant, meaningful contact with faculty/staff, students, and parents, and helps to champion the school's vision and mission. The job also demands changing channels many times throughout the day; it has always fit my personality. Q: A school administrator is a 24/7 position. What about school leadership moves you to serve in this capacity? A: I have always loved school. I literally never missed a day from K–12.* Part of it was FOMO (fear of missing out), but a lot was the great energy that schools provide. It's invigorating to start the day at the front of the school entrance, knowing how varied it will be, ending it on the playing fields, theatre, or in clubs. (*Editor's note: Dan attended The Day School from N–8th grade, the highest grade before Trevor added a high school.)
