Q: You like to ask students and alumni to reflect on those faculty members who have made a significant impact on their lives. Who were some of those people in your experience, and how did they help you advance—both as a student and as a person? A: I have been fortunate to have many incredible teachers in my life. It started at The Day School, where I was introduced to a faculty who enjoyed their time in the classroom as much as they did outside the classroom. We, the students, felt that the faculty really cared and liked us. Mr. Lindow, Ms. Sabatakakis, Ms. Deluca, Mr. Cavar, Mr. Johnson, Mr. Green, Mr. and Ms. Cotty, Mr. Z (Zulakis), and so many others often engaged us into the late afternoon with floor hockey games, music jam sessions, and spontaneous discussions. Q: As you transitioned from student to educator, who were your first peer mentors? A: Trevor's faculty has always boasted an eclectic mix of educators. I learned to appreciate different approaches to a subject that, for example, Mr. Sternstein would present in English class. Science Teacher Ms. Little approached her discipline from a very traditional angle, but still communicated her love of science to the students. I always appreciated the way Mr. Eschricht (History) made the topics fun and informative. Mr. Zulakis (Visual Arts) mesmerized us when we learned the process of animation. The faculty at Trevor are passionate about what they teach and who they teach. Over my career, I have learned how this is invaluable for young people. Q: Are there classmates and friends who taught you important life lessons on your Trevor journey? How do you stay connected with former classmates and students? A: I have the distinct advantage of being a twin, and as a result, my network of friends is often twofold. Peter (Feigin '84, P'19, P'21 ) and I have stayed connected to many Trevor classmates over the past 40 years and it has been fascinating to track everyone's journey. Overall, I have found Trevor alumni to have a higher "happiness" factor than most. I believe this has a direct correlation to a healthy and happy education. Q: One of your first professional positions at The Day School was the Varsity Basketball coach. What are some similarities between being a coach and a school administrator? A: When I coached, I would consider what we needed to work on, and at every practice would address those issues with specific drills, Coach Feigin with 1993 Boys Varsity Basketball Team Malcolm Lee '84 with Peter (left) and Dan Feigin '84 68 / TREVOR MAGAZINE SUMMER 2022–2023
