Dear Trevor Community: It is well documented that I have played many roles in my 30+ years at Trevor Day School (40+, counting my years as a student). Board Chair Valerie Mnuchin has said that I must bleed Trevor red, and I am honored by that metaphor. It is through my many lenses that I relished reading the Winter 2023–24 Trevor Magazine, my first as Head of School. In the pages that follow, there are articles on literacy (page 20) and Trevor's Advisory Program (page 22), which remind me of the deep relationships that form as a result of small interactive classes and our Advisory structure. As a faculty, we intentionally get to know our students well. Students thrive when they are known—they are more confident, self-reliant, and they develop incredible agency. I speak from experience that faculty also flourish when these deeper connections are made. Often I would push myself to work harder in preparation for classes, because I knew and respected how hard my students were working. On page 12 we celebrate the accomplishment of Gwen C. '24 reaching her 1,000th career point in basketball, and recognize the elite group of Trevor alumni who share this honor. Athletics are an important part of my life. I have coached or watched each of Trevor's 1,000-point scorers over the past 30 years. (Fewer than one percent of all high school athletes have achieved this milestone.) The lessons learned from sport are transferable to all stations in life— sacrifice, dedication, industry, empathy, heartache, joy, teamwork, and an understanding of both your strengths and weaknesses—these are all elements upon which I continually reflect. I feel fortunate to be in contact with so many of the students I coached. To this day, memories of bus rides to and from games are as vivid as our many championships. We have a feature article on MIOW (Multiple Identities, One World) Day 2024 (page 28), the 20th anniversary of this student-centric day dedicated to embracing our diverse identities and spreading awareness and knowledge. I measure the success of MIOW Day by the conversations and debates that follow its challenging content. This year, like the 19 that preceded it, was so A Letter from the Head of School successful because it was driven by student inquiry, passion, and advocacy. In this issue, we profile two outstanding Trevor alumni. The first, Peter Wu- Buchenholz '85, P'33, P'34, P'37, was a Day School schoolmate (he was one grade behind me) and is now a peer Trevor parent. Peter volunteers at our Lower School admissions events where he thoughtfully reflects on the community he was a part of, one that his own children now experience. Peter does vital work with the New York State Division of Human Rights and has written a poignant portrait of his time as a Day School student and his return as a Trevor parent. (Many students and parents may also know him as Ms. Wu's husband!) Our second profile spotlights Natalie Hernandez-Green '96, Founding Director of the Center for Maternal Health Equity and Associate Professor in the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology at the Morehouse School of Medicine. The year Natalie graduated, I was the Upper School Dean of Students and an English teacher. Even as a teen, Natalie was a brilliant student and, more importantly, incredibly kind. I can see her stationed at Ms. Jarcho's desk, sorting through primary sources that Ms. Jarcho had archived for decades, and thoughtfully debating every topic presented. It is no surprise that she is so accomplished in her field. So much in this issue celebrates Trevor's identity not just as an educational institution, but also as a center of community. From Homecoming (page 6) and all-school service endeavors (page 16) to the work of our dedicated Parents Association (page 4) and the joyful sharing of Class Happenings from our alumni community (page 54), we come together time and time again as members of Trevor Day School. I am thankful for the warm and supportive welcome I have received as Head of School, and I am reminded daily that there are thousands who also bleed Trevor red.
