of silence (and a few tears), one of my seniors spoke up. He said, "Thank you" to each player and assured them that "We will never forget this game." There was no regret or blame. No individuals, only the team. "Team" is a beautifully wide concept that in addition to athletes and coaches, often includes managers, teachers, and fans. It is a true form of community. Edie Markman '16 is both Upper School Writing Specialist & Advisor and an assistant coach for Girls Varsity Basketball. When she was a Trevor Upper School student, she managed the Boys Varsity Basketball team. Edie recounted a story that has touched my heart and mind as an educator for over a decade. "During my junior year, my dad passed away on the second day of tryouts for Boys Varsity Basketball (for whom I was the team manager). The Head Coach and fellow alum, Lyle Friess '04, ensured me that the gym would serve as my safe place. I was grateful for how he inspired the players to be teammates who looked out for each other and who also showed up for me off the court. Having the privilege to go somewhere six times a week and be immersed in a supportive community helped me through those initial months. But more than that, under Lyle's leadership, the feeling of being a part of something and not feeling guilty about enjoying myself for two hours every day is what got me through that year. He demonstrated that being part of a team is about so much more than the sport itself. I'm forever grateful to have been a part of that team, and above all, I am so thankful to have had a coach like Lyle when I most needed guidance." The senior on the bus ride home from our State Tournament loss was right. We will never forget "that game," or "that teacher," or "that coach." I personally have hundreds of memories as a student-athlete and hundreds more as a coach, all of which will continue to teach and inspire me into my old age. Experiences as big as "that" game, as small as a Tuesday practice, or as special as your advisor celebrating your lab report and your ball- handling skills in your Family Conference. Because of our teachers, our coaches, and Trevor's unique cadre of teacher-coaches, we learn how to be stronger as a group than we could ever be as individuals. Trevor's focus on excellence, engagement, and balance plays seamlessly into both the realms of academics and athletics. n Coach Tice with Varsity Golfer Emma O. 44 / TREVOR MAGAZINE SPRING 2024–25
