Finding Balance: The Interplay
Between Coaching and Teaching

I am thankful for the incredible relationships I have had with students over the past three
decades; the relationships with students who I have had the privilege of coaching and
teaching are particularly dynamic.
I have coached hundreds of Trevor
student-athletes, and spent
thousands of hours in our gyms
and playing fields around the city. I
coached Trevor's Varsity Boys Soccer
and Basketball teams for nearly 20
years. I also enjoyed a two-year stint
as the Middle School Softball Coach.
Even my summers were dedicated
to coaching at various camps around
the country. I loved everything about
coaching, and still do.
For much of the time I was
coaching, I taught Upper School
English. The dual roles were an
incredible opportunity to get to
know students as individuals, both
inside and outside the classroom.
I heartily agree with educators
Peter Cardone and David Barth,
who have written, "There is a long-
held belief that the ideal situation
within our nation's schools is that
coaches are also teachers within the
school system. After all, teachers
understand students and how the
