Left: While waiting to visit the historic Indian caves in Viñales, Margot D.-V. shares a moment with an actor representing one of the indigenous Indian people of the Pinar del Río region. In addition to learning traditional dances, students were introduced to their language. Above, left: In the town of Alamar, a farmer works the land at the innovative urban organic farm, Organoponico Vivero Alamar. e farm produces food for the community and offers its employees incentives such as produce and profit sharing. Born out of necessity when farmers did not have access to pesticides and fertilizers (due to the loss of economic support from Russia when the Soviet Union dismantled), Cuba has long been a model for sustainable organic farming. Above, right: A fruit seller at his stand in Havana. Left: Students had the privilege of watching a rehearsal at the Fernando Alonso National Ballet School. Right: e students were then given a private lesson at Cuban dancer Carlos Acosta's contemporary dance school. Above: Salvador's Alley. Close to the University of Havana in the Cayo Hueso section, Salvador Gonzáles Escalona metamorphosed its shortest street, Callejón de Hamel, with his huge colorful murals and sculptures. Transformed from a poor neighborhood, it is now viewed as a center for Afro-Cuban culture. Young children can learn painting in workshops and rumba performances held every Sunday are a huge draw for tourists. Above: Students enjoyed a folkloric dance performance at Hamel's Alley in Havana, where the dancers perform as well as teach about the meaning of the Afro-Cuban 'orishas' (Cuban gods and goddesses) whom each dancer portrays. After the performance, the students were invited to participate. Eva D. '19 is pictured here. 3 1 T R E V O R D AY S C H O O L n FA L L 2 0 1 7 – 2 0 1 8
