Lisa Whitbeck, Kindergarten Associate Teacher, worked on a summer science grant, creating a nutrition unit for Kindergarten, and expanding our existing science curriculum to include hands-on experiments. She also attended workshops for Understanding by Design, Responsive Classroom, and Wilson Foundations this summer. Liz Fishman, Grade 5 English and History, and Margaux Lynam, Grade 5 Math and Science, went to Responsive Classroom training for middle school over the summer. Albert Berishaj, Grade 2 Head Teacher, and Spiro Gouras, Grade 3 Head Teacher, attended the Teachers College Writing Workshop Summer Institute, where for five days they broke into large and small groups to tackle these and other topics: the central role of curriculum development and planning in the teaching of writing; units of study in writing workshop; helping students write well about reading; genre studies in reading and writing memoirs; poetry and short fiction; the importance of assessment-based instruction; methods of holding students accountable for doing their best work; using literature to help students craft their writing; and classroom structures that support inquiry and collaboration. Lisa Goldberg, Director of Auxiliary Programs, led a workshop at the NYSAIS after-school directors meeting in November at the Carey Conference Center. Topics included tips on how to organize programs and avoid last- minute time crunches. Attendees also learned about integrating an Faculty Bulletins 8 lbs 5.6 oz and measured 20 inches long. Morgan Porzio, Director of Marketing and Communications, and her husband, John Dumey, welcomed baby boy Connor Julio Porzio Dumey into the world on September 9, 2016. He weighed 8 lbs 2 oz. Celeste Scott, Grades 6–12 PE Teacher, and her partner, Khalilah Alexander, welcomed their daughter, Parker Anna, on July 15, 2016, at 7:50 am. She weighed 3 lbs, 10 oz, and measured 17 inches long. Michelle Munizaga, Grade 2 Head Teacher, attended Part 1 of the Facilitative Leadership Seminar at NYU Metro Learning Communities. is past summer, she also helped facilitate the "Speak Truth to Power" program at the NYU Institute as part of the RFK Center for Human Rights, a conference focused on human rights education. Mary Moran, Grade 4 Head Teacher, took her vows and was ordained as a lay Buddhist priest this past summer— the culmination of a dozen years of work and study. Mary's husband and daughter traveled to Japan to witness her ordination. Michelle Rechenberg, Grade 1 Head Teacher, Lisa Whitbeck, Kindergarten Associate Teacher, and Mary Moran, Grade 4 Head Teacher, attended classes at the Understanding by Design Institute in July. Births Richard Fortunat, Grades 6–12 PE Teacher, and his wife, Whitney Jacobs, welcomed baby Lennox Cliff into the world on Friday, November 4, 2016, at 11:54 am. He weighed
